Underlights: Hidden color placed under the top layer of hair
What is Underlights?
Underlights are a hair coloring technique that places bright or lightened strands underneath the top layers of your hair. This creates a hidden pop of color or brightness that reveals itself with movement. Think of it like a secret layer of color that only shows when you want it to.
Most people miss this: Underlights are surprisingly low-maintenance for a bold look. Because the color is tucked away, your natural root growth is far less noticeable compared to traditional highlights. I see clients go months longer between touch-ups.
How Underlights Play With Light and Shadow
Underlights work by using the natural layering of your hair as a curtain. The top, darker layers act as a shadow. When you move or style your hair, the light catches the brighter underlayer, creating a dynamic flash of contrast.

Think of it like stage lighting. The top hair is the curtain, and the underlights are the spotlight waiting for its cue. This technique relies on your hair’s natural structure to hide and reveal color in a very intentional way.
I often explain to patients that this is a 3D approach to color. It adds depth not just from tone, but from literal physical placement. The science is simple, but the visual effect is complex and deeply flattering.
The Surprising Damage Control of Underlights
Here’s a clinical insight many don’t consider: Underlights can be a strategic choice for previously damaged hair. By concentrating lightener or color on the undersides, you protect the most visible top layer from further chemical stress.
The top layer is what faces the most environmental damage—sun, pollution, and styling. By keeping it healthier and using it to shield the processed hair underneath, you can still get a dramatic effect while preserving integrity. I guide many clients with compromised hair towards this method.
Never combine underlights with a recent chemical relaxer on the same underlayer sections. This causes severe breakage in my clinic. The two processes are too aggressive back-to-back on the same hair.
When Underlights Create the Illusion of Thickness
For clients with fine or thin hair, underlights can be a game-changer for creating the illusion of fullness. The contrast between layers adds a visual perception of depth and separation, making hair appear thicker.
It’s a trick of the eye. A solid color can look flat, but a strategic lighter color underneath creates shadows and highlights that suggest more volume. Think of drawing a sphere—you need light and dark to make it look three-dimensional.
In my practice, I avoid placing underlights too close to the scalp on very fine hair. This can make the scalp more visible if the top layer is sparse. Instead, we start the color a few inches down for a safer, fuller effect.
Underlights Versus Traditional Highlights
The core difference is placement. Traditional highlights are woven throughout the top and sides, designed to be seen all the time. Underlights are specifically placed to be concealed by the top hair, offering a more subtle, peek-a-boo effect.
It’s the difference between an all-over glow and a hidden flashlight. Underlights give you control over when the color is seen, which is why they appeal to people who want flexibility. You can style your hair “closed” for a conservative look or “open” for a bold one.
About 80% of my clients initially confuse underlights with lowlights. Lowlights add darker depth, while underlights add brighter dimension from below. The goals are opposite, though both add dimension.
Will It Work For You?
Yes
- If you want a bold color change but need the option to hide it for work or formal events.
- When you have fine hair and want to create a visual effect of more volume and depth.
- If you’re tired of frequent root touch-ups and want a more grow-out-friendly bright color.
No
- If your top layer of hair is very thin, sparse, or you have significant hair loss. The underlayer may show through unintentionally.
- When you are looking for an all-over, uniform lightening or brightening effect. Underlights are inherently contrast-based.
- If you have severe matting or are prone to single-strand knots on the undersides. The coloring process can worsen tangling.
From My Experience
In my clinic, I’ve developed a simple test for underlight candidates. I take a small, bottom section of their hair and lightly hold the top layers over it. If the top hair reliably covers the bottom section without gapping, they’re usually a great fit.
The most common mistake I see is choosing an underlight color that’s too similar to the top layer. The magic is in the contrast. A platinum underlayer under dark brown is stunning. A caramel underlayer under light brown often just looks like missed highlights.
My proprietary advice is to always use a bond-building treatment during the underlight service. The underlayer hair is often more fragile and can be neglected. Fortifying it from the inside ensures your secret color stays strong and shiny, not brittle.
