What is Type 4 Hair?

Type 4 hair is a hair texture category that features very tight coils and zigzag patterns. This hair type forms a dense, springy structure that shrinks significantly when dry. Most people miss this: a single Type 4 strand can have multiple sharp bends within just one inch of length.

It’s the most delicate of all curl types because its tight bends create natural weak points. Think of your hair’s shape like a folded paperclip versus a straight one; the folds are where stress concentrates. I see this fragility daily in my practice, where breakage often happens at these sharpest angles.

When Type 4 Hair Locks Out Moisture

The zigzag shape of Type 4 hair makes it hard for moisture to travel down the strand. Your natural oils from the scalp can’t easily coat the hair shaft. Think of it like trying to slide a bead down a crinkled straw instead of a smooth one.
