Trichoptilosis is the medical term for split ends. It is a hair shaft defect where the protective outer layer frays, causing the hair strand to split into two or more fragments at its tip. Think of it like a rope that’s unraveling at the end.

Most people miss this: once a split starts, it doesn’t just sit there. It can travel up the hair shaft like a tear in a piece of paper, causing more breakage and making your hair look thin and dull. I see this as the most common sign of cumulative damage in my clinic.

Always follow with a professional protein treatment to reinforce bonds. Thermal damage is from hot tools; a good heat protectant is non-negotiable.

Trichoptilosis and Your Hair’s Porosity Connection

Your hair’s porosity—its ability to absorb and hold moisture—plays a huge role in trichoptilosis. High porosity hair has a raised, damaged cuticle that snags and splits easily. Low porosity hair can be brittle and snap if moisture can’t get in.

Understanding your hair porosity is key to choosing the right products to prevent splits. For high porosity, you need sealants like oils. For low porosity, you need lightweight, penetrating humectants. I misdiagnose this with clients all the time, leading to the wrong routine.
