Transitioning Hair: Hair growing out from chemically straightened to natural

“`html

What is Transitioning Hair?

Transitioning hair is the process of growing out your natural hair texture while gradually trimming away chemically treated or heat-damaged ends. It is a journey that allows your natural curl pattern, wave, or coil to emerge from the root while you manage two distinct hair textures on one head. Most people miss this: the new growth isn’t just a different texture; its entire protein structure and porosity level are different from the old, processed ends.

Think of it like a tree with two types of bark. The new growth from the roots is strong and healthy. The old, treated ends are like weathered bark that’s dry and fragile. Your job is to protect the new while slowly removing the old without causing a massive breakage storm in the middle.

Why Transitioning Hair Creates a Battle Zone on Your Strand

Your hair has a memory. Chemically relaxed or permanently colored hair has its internal bonds permanently altered. The new growth that comes in has its natural bonds intact. This creates a literal line of demarcation where these two structures meet.

This line is the weakest point on your hair shaft. It’s where breakage most often happens during transitioning. I see this constantly in my clinic—snapping right at that junction because the stress from combing is too much for the stark difference in elasticity.

Think of it like taping a strong rubber band to a brittle piece of string. When you pull, the string snaps. The same physics apply to your two textures.

How Transitioning Hair Responds to Moisture (And Why It Freaks Out)

Your natural new growth and your processed ends absorb water at wildly different rates. The porous, damaged ends suck up moisture like a sponge but can’t hold onto it. The healthier new growth might resist moisture if you have low porosity hair.

This leads to constant imbalance. You’ll often find your roots feel one way and your ends feel another, no matter what product you use. I advise my clients to apply products in sections, almost treating the two textures as separate heads of hair.

For example, a heavier cream on the drier ends and a lighter liquid on the new growth. This targeted approach prevents the roots from getting weighed down and the ends from staying thirsty.

The Transitioning Hair Detangling Dilemma

Detangling is where most transitioning people cause the most breakage. You must change your technique completely. Start from the very tips of your ends and work up towards the roots, inch by inch.

Never start detangling from the root. You’ll just push all the knots down to that weak line of demarcation and cause a massive tangle that will snap. I recommend using a slip-rich conditioner and your fingers or a wide-tooth comb for this.

Use more water and conditioner than you think you need. The goal is to eliminate resistance. If you feel a tug, stop. Isolate that knot and carefully work it out before moving on.

Transitioning Hair and the Protein-Moisture Seesaw

This is a critical insight from my practice. Your two textures have opposite needs. The processed ends are often protein-deficient and lack structural integrity. Your virgin new growth has its natural protein structure.

If you use a strong protein treatment on your whole head, you can easily overload and stiffen your new growth. But if you only focus on moisture, your damaged ends become mushy and weak. The solution is localized treatments.

Apply protein treatments mainly to the mid-lengths and ends. Focus intense moisture treatments on the ends as well, but use lighter hydration on your roots. This balanced, zonal approach is a game-changer.

Will Protective Styles Work For Transitioning Hair?

Yes

  • If the style is installed without excessive tension on your edges and hairline.
  • When you maintain a consistent moisturizing routine to your own hair underneath the style.
  • If you keep the style for a safe duration (typically 6-8 weeks max) to prevent matting and neglect.

No

  • If the style relies on tiny, tight braids or constant pulling—this invites traction alopecia.
  • When you “set and forget” and don’t care for your scalp and own hair underneath.
  • If the added weight of extensions strains the fragile line of demarcation on your hair.

From My Experience

The single biggest mistake I see is impatience. Transitioning is a lesson in listening to your hair, not fighting it. Your hair will tell you what it needs through its texture, snap, and feel. The most successful clients are the ones who become students of their own strands.

I developed a simple “pinch test” for my transitioning clients. Pinch a single strand of hair between your thumb and finger at the line of demarcation. Gently pull. If it consistently snaps at that exact spot, you need more targeted strength and flexibility there.

This isn’t about just waiting for length. It’s about actively preserving every millimeter of new growth. Every strand you save through gentle care is a strand you won’t have to wait months to regrow. The goal is to end up with a full head of healthy hair, not just a shorter, natural style achieved by massive breakage.

Celebrate the small wins—a successful detangle session, a week without breakage, discovering a product that works for both textures. This journey reshapes your relationship with your hair, teaching care and respect that lasts long after the last processed end is gone.
