This design allows them to cut only some of the hairs in a section, creating a softer, more textured finish. Most people don’t realize that these shears don’t actually make hair thinner in diameter; they just create the visual effect of less density.

How Thinning Shears Trick the Eye

The magic is in the blade’s teeth. Think of the notched blade like a comb that holds some hairs back while the straight blade cuts the others. This creates tiny, staggered lengths within your hair.

When light hits these varied lengths, it scatters instead of reflecting off one blunt edge. I see this create instant softness for clients with thick, boxy ends that look too heavy.

When Thinning Shears Cause Hidden Damage

Thinning Shears vs. Texturizing Shears: The Critical Difference

Many use these terms interchangeably, but they work differently. Standard thinning shears have teeth spaced closely together and remove a consistent, small amount of hair.

True texturizing shears have wider-spaced teeth or variable patterns. They create more dramatic, chunky texture by removing larger, strategic sections.

In my clinic, I advise clients to ask their stylist *which* tool they’re using. The wrong choice on your hair type can lead to over-thinning or an overly chunky, uneven result.

From My Experience

The most common mistake I see is overuse. A skilled stylist might use them on only 10-20% of the hair, focusing on the underlayers and ends. When every strand is run through the thinning shears, it’s a recipe for future frizz.

I have a simple test I share with clients. Run a small section of your hair between your fingers after a cut. If it feels uniformly smooth, it’s likely a clean shear cut.

If it feels prickly or uneven, like tiny spikes, thinning shears were probably used. This isn’t inherently bad, but it tells you to amp up your conditioning and sealing routine to protect those fresh, vulnerable ends.
