Texturizing Shears: Scissors designed to remove bulk and add texture

What are Texturizing Shears?

Texturizing shears are a hair cutting tool that removes bulk and creates soft, blended separation in the hair. They are special scissors with teeth or notches on one or both blades that take out small sections of hair instead of cutting a straight line.

Think of them as a sculptor’s tool for hair, carving out air and movement instead of just shortening length. Most people don’t realize this: when used correctly, they don’t actually make hair look thinner, but instead create the illusion of more volume and body by removing internal weight.

How Texturizing Shears Trick the Eye

Your hair has density, which is how many strands you have per square inch. Texturizing shears work by strategically reducing the hair density in specific areas without changing the overall outline.

Think of a dense forest. If you carefully remove some trees in patches, light can get through and the remaining trees appear more distinct. The shears do this by cutting some strands shorter than others within the same section.

I see this when patients complain about “triangle head” – where the bottom of their hair is too thick. A few strategic texturizing cuts in that bulky area can release the shape, allowing the hair to fall more naturally. It’s a game of internal geometry.

When Texturizing Shears Cause Chaos

The biggest mistake is using these shears on the very ends of your hair. This creates a frizzy, frayed appearance because you’re exposing multiple cut ends at the same spot.

Think of the end of a rope. If you neatly cut it, it’s clean. If you shred it with a jagged blade, it frays wildly. Texturizing should happen mid-shaft or closer to the root for bulk removal, never just at the tips.

Over 80% of my clients who try DIY texturizing create this problem. They focus on the ends looking “wispy,” but that wispiness is actually thousands of split ends waiting to travel up the hair shaft. Once you create them, you can’t uncut them.

Texturizing Shears vs. Thinning Shears: The Hidden Difference

Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they are different tools for different jobs. Thinning shears usually have finer, more closely spaced teeth and remove less hair per snip, designed to blend harsh lines.

Texturizing shears typically have wider-spaced, deeper teeth. They take out more substantial chunks to create clear separation and piece-y texture. Using thinning shears for a texturizing job often results in a weak, over-thinned look.

In my clinic, I never use standard thinning shears on curly or coily textured hair patterns. The fine teeth can cause odd clumping. Texturizing shears with wider teeth, used with a specific technique, are far safer for maintaining curl integrity.

The Right Haircut Angle for Texturizing Shears

The angle at which you hold the shears against the hair is everything. Holding them parallel to the floor creates a horizontal line of removed weight, which can leave visible notches if you’re not careful.

The professional method is to hold the shears at a 45 to 90-degree angle to the hair strand. Think of sliding the shears down the hair like you’re sharpening a pencil, not chopping across it like a log.

This angled approach, often called “point cutting” or “slide cutting,” feathers the cut and leaves no harsh lines. I coach my clients’ stylists to use this method, especially around the face-framing layers, for a seamless blend.

Will It Work For You?

Yes

  • If you have thick, dense hair that feels heavy or forms a “bell” shape.
  • When your blunt haircut looks too solid and lacks movement or swing.
  • If you have straight or wavy hair that needs internal volume without adding layers that shorten length.

No

  • If your hair is already very fine, thin, or suffering from significant breakage.
  • When your hair is chemically damaged or has high porosity, as texturizing can exacerbate dryness and split ends.
  • If you have very tight, fragile curl patterns (like Type 4c) without an expert who specializes in cutting textured hair.

From My Experience

Texturizing shears are a precision instrument, not a universal fix. The most common issue I diagnose is “over-texturizing,” where the hair looks fluffy yet thin, with no cohesive shape. This happens from repeated, uninformed use.

My proprietary insight is to think in thirds. Never texture more than the inner third of any given hair section. You’re aiming to remove internal bulk, not density at the surface. The outer two-thirds of the section should remain intact to maintain a healthy outer shell and shine.

Finally, texturizing is a final detailing step. Always get your haircut shape established with regular shears first. Then, and only then, use texturizing shears to refine. This preserves the haircut’s structure while adding the airy finish everyone wants.
