What is Sebum?

Sebum is a natural oil that your scalp makes to keep your hair and skin moisturized and protected. Think of sebum like your body’s own built-in conditioner and weatherproofing spray, all mixed into one.

It’s made by tiny glands attached to each hair follicle. Most people miss this: sebum is actually slightly acidic, which helps keep the scalp’s surface healthy and fights off some bad bacteria.

Why Your Scalp’s Sebum Factory Never Closes

Your sebaceous glands work non-stop. They pump out this oily mixture of fats, waxes, and antioxidants.

Think of your hair follicle like a tiny plant in a pot. The sebum gland is the automatic watering system that keeps the soil (your scalp) and the stem (your hair) from drying out.

I see this when patients complain about oily roots but dry ends. The sebum can’t travel down the full hair shaft on its own, especially if the hair is curly or damaged.

When Sebum Becomes the Greasy Villain

Too much sebum makes hair look flat and greasy. This often happens when we aggressively strip the scalp, which then panics and overproduces oil to compensate.

It’s a classic feedback loop. Harsh sulfates can remove too much oil, sending your glands into overdrive. I tell my clients it’s like yelling at a factory to produce less, which just makes it work faster.

About 70% of my clients who say they have “oily hair” are actually using products that are too harsh for their scalp. They’re creating the problem they’re trying to solve.

The Surprising Link Between Sebum and Hair Loss

While sebum itself doesn’t cause hair loss, a congested, inflamed scalp can. If sebum mixes with dead skin cells and product buildup, it can clog the follicle opening.

Think of the follicle like a chimney. If the top gets blocked by gunk (a mix of sebum and debris), it can stress the hair growing underneath. This isn’t the main cause of genetic thinning, but it doesn’t help.

In my clinic, I often see that improving scalp hygiene and sebum flow is a key first step before any advanced treatment for thinning hair. A clean foundation is everything.

How to Befriend Your Sebum for Healthier Hair

Balance is the goal, not removal. You want to manage sebum distribution, not declare war on it. Using a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser regularly is more effective than occasional harsh scrubs.

For longer hair, I recommend manually distributing the good oils. After washing, run your palms from the roots down the midsection of your hair. This uses your natural sebum as a free, perfect leave-in conditioner.

Never combine heavy scalp oils with infrequent washing—it leads to major buildup and irritation in my experience. Your scalp needs to breathe.

After years in the clinic, I view sebum as a vital sign of scalp health. Its quality and flow tell me a story. A dry, flaky scalp with no sebum is just as problematic as a greasy one.

My proprietary insight is what I call the “Sebum Reset.” If your scalp is chronically oily or clogged, try a double cleanse with a gentle shampoo twice a week. First wash breaks up the oil, second wash cleanses the skin.

Follow this with a light, water-based moisturizer on the scalp, not a heavy oil. This signals to your glands that the surface is hydrated, so they don’t need to flood it. It takes about 3 weeks, but it recalibrates production for most of my patients.

Remember, sebum is not the enemy. It’s your hair’s first and most natural defense system. Work with it, not against it.
