What is Oily Hair?

Oily hair is a hair condition where your scalp produces too much sebum, a natural oil, that coats your hair strands and makes them look greasy. Think of sebum like your skin’s natural moisturizer that sometimes goes into overdrive.

Most people miss this: Your scalp’s oil production can actually spike if you wash your hair too often. I see this constantly in my practice—people shampoo daily to combat grease, only to train their scalp to pump out more oil faster.

Why Oily Hair Clings to Your Roots

Your scalp has tiny factories called sebaceous glands attached to each hair follicle. They make sebum to keep your scalp and hair hydrated.

This oil travels up the hair shaft from the root. Think of each hair strand like a straw—oil gets poured in at the top and slowly slides down.

When these glands are overactive, the oil builds up quickly at the roots. I find that about 60% of my clients with oily roots actually have a dry scalp underneath the grease, which triggers more oil production.

The Night Sweat Surprise for Oily Hair

You might not connect nighttime sweating with morning grease, but they are directly linked. Body heat and sweat can stimulate your sebaceous glands while you sleep.

This mixes with existing scalp oils, creating a greasy base by sunrise. I advise clients with this issue to use a silk or satin pillowcase, as it creates less friction and absorbs less oil than cotton.

Changing your pillowcase twice a week can make a noticeable difference. It’s a simple step most overlook in their hair care routine.

When Oily Hair Meets Dry Ends

This common combo, often called “combination hair,” happens when sebum from the scalp doesn’t travel fully down the hair shaft. It leaves the roots oily while the older ends stay dry and brittle.

Think of it like a water slide that runs out of water halfway down. The top is slick, but the bottom gets no moisture.

In my clinic, I see this most in people with longer hair or those who use heavy conditioners on their roots. The fix is always about precise product placement—conditioner only on the mid-lengths and ends.

Oily Hair and the Product Buildup Trap

Using the wrong products can make oily hair much worse. Heavy silicones and waxes coat the hair, trapping oil and dirt against the scalp.

This creates a sticky, greasy film that regular shampoo can’t always remove. It’s like putting a plastic wrap over your scalp—nothing can breathe or escape.

I recommend a clarifying shampoo once a week to break down this buildup. But never overuse it, as it can lead to a rebound overproduction of oil.

From My Experience

After years in the clinic, my biggest insight is that oily hair is often a scalp hydration issue. A dehydrated scalp will overcompensate by producing excess oil.
