What are Lice (Head Lice)?

Lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on the human scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They are a common parasite that spreads easily through head-to-head contact, causing an itchy scalp. Most people miss this: Lice don’t jump or fly; they crawl incredibly fast, which is why they spread so efficiently in classrooms.

An infestation, known as pediculosis, involves three forms: the egg (nit), the nymph, and the adult louse. The itching is actually an allergic reaction to the lice saliva. I see many parents panic, but understanding their life cycle is the first step to stopping them.

How Lice Grip Your Hair

Lice have specially adapted claws at the end of their six legs. These claws are perfectly designed to grasp onto a human hair shaft. Think of it like a rock climber using their fingers to hold onto tiny crevices on a cliff face.

Their bodies are also flattened, allowing them to stay close to the scalp for warmth and feeding. I often find that the most intense itching occurs behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, as these are the warmest spots they prefer.

The Surprising Life Cycle of Lice

A female louse can lay up to 10 eggs, or nits, per day. She uses a powerful, glue-like substance to cement each nit firmly to the base of a hair shaft. This glue is so strong that it can survive regular shampooing and even some chemical treatments.

The nits hatch in about 8-9 days, releasing nymphs. These nymphs mature into adults in another 9-12 days and begin the cycle again. This rapid reproduction is why an infestation can seem to explode overnight in my clinic observations.

Why Lice Treatments Sometimes Fail

Many over-the-counter treatments work by attacking the nervous system of the live bug. However, they often have little to no effect on the unhatched egg. If you don’t remove every single nit, a whole new generation will hatch and restart the problem.

Resistance is also a growing issue. Just like bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, lice populations can develop a tolerance to common pesticide-based treatments. I always recommend a thorough comb-out with a fine-tooth comb as the most crucial step, regardless of the treatment used.

Lice and Hair Texture: An Unfair Advantage

Lice can infest any hair type, from the straightest to the coiliest textures. However, the shape of their claws gives them a slight mechanical advantage on certain hair shafts. Their claws are curved to grip a cylindrical shape most effectively.

This doesn’t mean people with coily hair are immune, but the infestation might look different. The nits may be harder to spot, and the lice might have a slightly harder time moving. The key is that any head of hair with a scalp can host lice.

From My Experience

The biggest mistake I see is assuming a treated head is a clear head. The treatment only kills the live bugs; the nits remain. You must physically remove every single egg. I tell my clients that the comb-out process is non-negotiable and requires meticulous, section-by-section work under good light.

Another proprietary insight I share is about the “no-poo” method. While great for scalp health, it can sometimes make an infestation harder to detect initially. The natural oils can camouflage the nits and the waxy buildup can mimic the appearance of lice debris. If you practice low-poo or no-poo, be extra vigilant about regular checks during outbreaks at your child’s school.
