What are Knotless Braids?

Knotless braids are a protective hairstyle where synthetic hair is gradually fed into your natural hair without a bulky knot at the base. This technique creates a seamless, flat start that looks more natural and feels more comfortable than traditional box braids. The braider begins with your own hair and slowly incorporates the extension hair as they plait.

Most people miss this: because there’s no initial knot pulling on your scalp, knotless braids significantly reduce the risk of a condition called traction alopecia. This is a form of hair loss caused by constant tension, which I see far too often in my practice from tight hairstyles.

How Knotless Braids Spare Your Scalp

Traditional braids start with a tight knot that pulls directly on your hair follicles from the very first second. Think of your hair follicle like a delicate plant; a hard, sudden yank can uproot it or damage its foundation. Knotless braids eliminate that initial shock.
