Impact Resistance: Ability to withstand sudden force

What is Impact Resistance?

Impact resistance is a measure of how well your hair can absorb and withstand sudden physical force without breaking. Think of it like a car’s bumper that’s designed to crumple on impact to protect the frame; your hair’s internal structure does something similar to prevent snapping.

Most people don’t realize that impact resistance isn’t just about strength, it’s about flexibility. I often see clients with strong-looking hair that snaps easily because it’s lost its natural ability to stretch and bounce back from a blow.

Why Your Hair’s Impact Resistance Matters Every Day

Every time you brush your hair, sleep on a cotton pillowcase, or even turn your head quickly, your strands face small impacts. Healthy hair bends and flexes with these forces, while compromised hair just breaks. I see this daily in my clinic with patients who experience unexpected breakage from seemingly harmless activities.

Think of your hair’s impact resistance like a trampoline. A good trampoline stretches to absorb your weight and then springs back. When your hair loses this quality, it’s like jumping on an old, stiff trampoline that just tears under pressure.

The Surprising Chemistry Behind Impact Resistance

Your hair’s ability to withstand impact comes from its protein structure, specifically the disulfide bonds that act like tiny springs throughout each strand. When these bonds are healthy, they allow your hair to stretch up to 30% of its length and then return to normal. I find about 70% of my clients have no idea their hair should be this elastic.

Chemical services like coloring or relaxing directly attack these crucial bonds. This is why I never recommend back-to-back chemical treatments – the cumulative damage dramatically reduces your hair’s impact resistance, leading to what I call “silent breakage” throughout the day.

When Low Impact Resistance Creates a Breakage Cycle

Hair with poor impact resistance doesn’t just break from obvious trauma. It develops micro-fractures that travel up the hair shaft like cracks in a windshield. Each small stress makes these tiny cracks worse until the strand finally gives way. This explains why some clients experience breakage that seems to come out of nowhere.

Think of it like a paperclip that you bend back and forth. It doesn’t break on the first bend, but the repeated stress weakens it until it snaps. Your hair behaves similarly when its impact resistance is low. This is particularly common in high porosity hair where the protective cuticle layer is compromised.

How to Test Your Hair’s Impact Resistance at Home

You can check your hair’s impact resistance with a simple stretch test. Take a single strand of hair and gently pull it from both ends. Healthy hair should stretch significantly before returning to its original length. If it snaps immediately or doesn’t bounce back, your impact resistance is compromised.

I teach this test to nearly all my patients because it provides immediate feedback about their hair’s internal health. Hair that fails this test needs protein treatments and reduced manipulation to rebuild its shock-absorbing capacity. This is especially important for those with chemically relaxed hair that’s already structurally altered.

Building Better Impact Resistance Through Smart Care

Improving your hair’s impact resistance requires a two-part approach: strengthening the internal protein structure while maintaining adequate moisture. Protein treatments fill in the gaps in the hair’s cortex, while moisture maintains the flexibility needed to absorb impact without becoming brittle.

Think of it like reinforcing concrete with rebar. The protein acts as the rebar providing strength, while the moisture is the concrete that gives flexibility. Getting this balance wrong is why so many protein overload situations actually increase breakage – the hair becomes too rigid and shatters on impact rather than flexing.

From My Experience

In my practice, I’ve observed that people dramatically underestimate how much protection their hair needs during everyday activities. The hair at your nape and temples often shows the first signs of impact resistance failure because it constantly rubs against clothing and pillows.

One of my most effective protocols involves having clients with low impact resistance switch to silk or satin pillowcases and wear protective styles like loose braids during sleep. This simple change reduces nightly stress on the hair, allowing natural repair processes to work more effectively. The difference in breakage rates after just two weeks is often remarkable.

I also encourage what I call “impact-aware styling” – being mindful of how much stress routines like tight ponytails, rough brushing, and even vigorous towel-drying place on vulnerable hair. Making small adjustments to these habits preserves your hair’s natural resilience far better than any quick-fix product alone.
