What is Hydration?

Hydration is the process of absorbing and retaining water molecules within the hair’s inner core, known as the cortex. This process keeps hair flexible, strong, and looking healthy. Think of it as giving your hair a long, cool drink of water.

Most people miss this: Your hair can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water. Once it’s fully saturated, it can’t hold any more, which is why simply spraying water on dry hair isn’t a long-term fix.

Why Hydration Evaporates Overnight

Your hair constantly loses moisture to the air around it, a process called transepidermal water loss. This happens faster in dry climates or heated rooms. Think of a damp sponge left on a counter; it dries out by morning.

I see this constantly in my clinic. Clients with high porosity hair, where the outer cuticle layer is damaged and open, lose moisture the fastest. Their hair often feels dry just hours after a deep conditioning treatment because the moisture escapes so easily.

When Hydration Turns to Damage

Repeatedly soaking and drying your hair can stress its protein structure, leading to a condition called hygral fatigue. This causes the hair strand to swell with water and then contract as it dries, weakening it over time.

The result is hair that feels mushy and stretchy when wet and brittle when dry. In my practice, I often see this in clients who overdo deep conditioning or sleep with wet hair trapped under a cap, never allowing it to dry properly.

The Hydration That Fools Your Hair

Humectants are ingredients like glycerin that pull moisture from the air into your hair. This sounds great, but in very dry or very humid conditions, they can backfire. In dry air, they may pull moisture from the deeper layers of your hair out to the surface.

I advise my clients to be strategic with humectants. If you’re in a desert climate, a product heavy in glycerin might leave your hair drier. But if you’re in a balanced, humid environment, it can be a fantastic hydrator.

How to Lock Hydration Into Your Strands

After water enters the hair shaft, you need emollients and sealants to trap it there. Emollients like natural oils smooth the gaps between the raised cuticle scales. Sealants like butters then create a protective layer over the top.

Think of it like a sandwich bag. The water is your food, and the emollients and sealants are the zip-lock seal, preventing everything from spilling out. This is the core principle behind the LCO method for maximizing moisture retention.

From My Experience

The most common mistake I see is confusing hydration with oiliness. People with dry hair often slather on heavy oils, but if the hair isn’t hydrated first, the oil just sits on top of a parched strand. You must use a water-based product or steam to get moisture inside before you seal it.

My proprietary insight involves the “Squeeze Test.” Take a wet strand of hair and gently squeeze it. If you hear a slight squeaking sound, that’s a sign of well-hydrated, healthy cuticles lying flat. If it’s silent, your hair is likely porous and thirsty, unable to hold onto the water effectively.
