What is Henna Hair?

Henna hair is a natural method of coloring and conditioning hair that uses a paste made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant. This plant-based dye coats the hair shaft to deposit a rich, reddish-brown color while also smoothing the cuticle for added shine and strength. Most people miss this: pure henna doesn’t just sit on top of your hair—it forms a permanent, covalent bond with the keratin proteins inside.

I see many clients who are surprised that the color actually gets richer and deeper over the first 48 hours after application. This is because the dye molecules need time to fully oxidize and develop their final shade. It is a completely different process from chemical dyes that use developers to force the color inside the hair.

Why Henna Hair Binds Like Superglue

Henna contains a molecule called lawsone that actively seeks out and bonds to the proteins in your hair. Think of your hair’s inner core, the cortex, as a magnet and the lawsone molecules as little bits of metal that lock on permanently. This bond is why henna color is so incredibly long-lasting and resistant to fading from shampoos.

In my clinic, I’ve observed that this binding process also temporarily fills in gaps in damaged hair strands. This can make the hair feel thicker and stronger immediately after a treatment. However, this bond is also the main reason you cannot use traditional chemical dyes over henna without risking severe damage.

The Henna Hair Commitment You Can’t Reverse

Once you apply henna, it becomes a permanent part of your hair’s structure. You cannot simply “color over it” later with a chemical lightener or dye. The lawsone dye molecule is now bonded to your hair’s protein, and chemical processes will react unpredictably, often leading to breakage or a strange greenish color.

When Henna Hair Locks Out Other Chemicals

The protective coating that henna creates acts as a barrier. This barrier prevents other chemicals, like those in hair relaxers or permanent hair color, from penetrating the hair shaft properly. When these chemicals can’t get in, they end up processing the hair unevenly or not at all, which is a recipe for disaster.

I have seen cases where clients came in with hair that melted off after a relaxer was applied over old henna. The outside was blocked, so the chemical damage concentrated in small, weak areas until the hair snapped. It is a stark reminder that natural does not always mean compatible with other treatments.
