Hair Type is a classification system that describes your hair’s natural curl pattern, texture, and behavior. It helps you understand why your hair does what it does, from lying flat to forming tight coils, so you can choose the right care and styling methods.

Most people miss this: Your hair type can actually change over your lifetime due to hormones, age, or even climate shifts. I often see patients who had pin-straight hair as children develop waves or curls during puberty.

How Hair Type Dictates Your Daily Routine

Your hair type directly controls how moisture interacts with your strands. Think of your hair’s cuticle like shingles on a roof; on straight hair, they lie flat, but on curly hair, they lift up, creating gaps where moisture escapes.

This is why I see so many clients with curly hair struggling with dryness. Their natural texture creates a longer, more difficult path for your scalp’s natural oils to travel down the hair shaft.

I advise keeping a seasonal product rotation. Heavier creams work for dry winter months, while lighter gels and mousses better manage summer humidity regardless of your hair type.
