Hair Products: Commercial preparations for hair care and styling

What are Hair Products?

Hair products are substances that you apply to your hair or scalp to clean, condition, style, or treat it. They are designed to manage your hair’s appearance, improve its health, and protect it from daily damage.

Think of them as tools for your hair’s specific needs, whether that’s adding volume, controlling frizz, or repairing damage from heat styling. Most people don’t realize that many products work by temporarily manipulating the hair’s delicate outer layer, known as the cuticle.

I often see patients who are surprised to learn that their favorite product might be causing buildup or that they’re using a styling cream completely wrong for their hair type. Understanding what each product does is the first step to truly healthy hair.

How Hair Products Trick Your Cuticle

Your hair’s cuticle is made of overlapping scales, like shingles on a roof. Many products work by temporarily smoothing these scales down or forcing them to open up. Conditioners, for instance, use positively charged ions to cling to the hair and flatten the cuticle for shine.

Think of a frizzy hair cuticle like a pinecone with all its scales sticking out. A good smoothing serum acts like a gentle hand, pressing those scales back into place. This creates a smooth surface that reflects light and feels soft.

In my practice, I find that over 70% of hair damage starts with cuticle abuse. Using a high-heat tool on hair coated with the wrong product is like trying to iron a shirt with dirt on it—you just bake the problem in.

When Hair Products Create a Moisture Prison

Product buildup acts like a plastic wrap around your hair shaft. It blocks out both the bad stuff and the good stuff, preventing moisture from getting in or out. This can leave your hair feeling dry and straw-like, even though you’re using moisturizing products.

Your hair is naturally porous, designed to absorb a certain amount of water. When a layer of silicone and other polymers builds up, it clogs those pores. It’s similar to how heavy foundation can clog the pores on your skin.

I advise my clients to use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks. This simple step removes the buildup that regular shampoos leave behind, especially if you have low porosity hair that is prone to this issue.

The Protein and Moisture Seesaw

Hair needs a careful balance of protein and moisture to stay strong and flexible. Protein treatments fill in gaps in the hair shaft, while moisturizers provide hydration. Using too much of one can cause the other to suffer.

Imagine your hair is a rubber band. A moisturized rubber band is stretchy and flexible. A protein-treated one is strong but can snap if it loses all its elasticity. You need both properties for healthy hair.

I see this imbalance constantly. Clients come in with brittle hair from protein overload or mushy, weak hair from moisture overload. The fix is almost always about rebalancing their product regimen, not adding more products.

Why Your Scalp Hates Your Styling Products

Heavy styling products can clog hair follicles and irritate the scalp. This can lead to inflammation, flaking, and even hinder hair growth over time. Your scalp skin is just as living and sensitive as the skin on your face.

Think of your hair follicles like tiny chimneys. When you pile heavy pomades and waxes at the base, you’re essentially smoking them out. This disrupts the natural environment needed for healthy hair to grow.

For patients with thinning hair or scalp tenderness, I always recommend focusing on the scalp first. A lightweight, scalp-friendly serum is far better than a thick cream that sits on the skin and blocks follicles.

Will Hair Products Work For You?

Yes

If you consistently experience frizz, dullness, or tangles that your current routine doesn’t address.

When you use heat styling tools frequently and need a protective barrier.

If your hair feels unbalanced—either too stiff and brittle or too soft and limp.

No

If you have active scalp conditions like severe dermatitis or psoriasis without a doctor’s guidance.

When you are allergic to specific ingredients commonly found in hair product formulations.

If you expect them to permanently repair split ends; only cutting can do that.

From My Experience

The biggest mistake I see is product layering without purpose. More is not always better. A simple, targeted routine with two or three well-chosen products will almost always outperform a complex, ten-step process.

I encourage my clients to think of their hair in seasons. What works in humid summer may not work in dry winter. Your products should be as adaptable as your wardrobe, changing with your environment and your hair’s current needs.

Listen to your hair. It will tell you what it needs. If a product makes it feel heavy, sticky, or dry, it’s not the right one, no matter how great the reviews are. Your hair’s feedback is the most valuable review you will ever get.
