What is Hair Porosity?

Hair porosity is a measure of your hair’s ability to absorb and hold onto moisture and oils. It describes how easily water can pass through the outer layer of your hair, called the cuticle. Most people miss this: Your hair’s porosity can change over time due to chemical processing, heat styling, and even environmental damage.

When Low Porosity Hair Locks Out Moisture

Low porosity hair has a very tight, compact cuticle layer. Think of it like a shingled roof with all the tiles perfectly flat and sealed. This makes it difficult for water and products to initially penetrate the hair shaft.

I see this when patients complain that their hair takes forever to get wet and products just sit on top, feeling greasy. Water and conditioner bead up on the strand instead of being absorbed. Using heat, like a steamer or warm dryer cap, can help open those cuticles slightly to let the good stuff in.

Why High Porosity Hair Can’t Hold a Drop

High porosity hair has a cuticle layer that is lifted and often damaged, with gaps or holes. Imagine that same roof, but now with missing and broken shingles. It absorbs water very quickly but loses it just as fast, leading to constant dryness and frizz.

This often results from chemical services like bleaching, frequent high-heat use, or rough handling. In my clinic, I find that 80% of clients with high porosity hair don’t realize they need to use heavier creams and butters to seal in the moisture their hair soaks up.

The Porosity Sweet Spot

Medium, or normal, porosity hair has a cuticle layer that is looser than low porosity but not as open as high porosity. Think of it like a well-functioning drawbridge—it opens to let moisture in and closes to keep it there effectively.

This hair type is the easiest to manage. It holds styles well, takes color predictably, and maintains moisture without much effort. It’s the gold standard we often try to help other porosity types achieve through targeted care.

How Your Porosity Changes Over Time

Your hair’s porosity isn’t always fixed from birth. Chemical processing is the biggest culprit. Every time you use a chemical relaxer or a high-lift color, you’re forcibly prying open the cuticle, which can lead to higher porosity over time.

Even consistent heat styling without a proper protectant can degrade the cuticle. I advise my clients to think of their hair’s cuticle like their skin’s barrier; once it’s compromised, it needs dedicated repair work to restore its function.

From My Experience

In my practice, I’ve developed a simple diagnostic trick I call the “Squeak Test.” After cleansing, run your fingers down a single wet strand. Low porosity hair will feel incredibly smooth, while high porosity hair will feel rough and may even audibly squeak.

This happens because the raised, damaged cuticles of high porosity hair create friction. It’s a more tactile and immediate sign than just watching how water behaves. This simple test helps my clients physically understand their hair’s condition, making them more committed to a porosity-focused care routine.
