Hair Pins: U-shaped pins for buns and chignons

What are Hair Pins?

Hair pins are small, U-shaped metal or plastic tools that secure sections of hair in place against the scalp. They are a fundamental hair accessory that provides a firm, discreet hold for everything from simple twists to complex updos. Most people miss this: the wavy ridges on the side of a standard bobby pin aren’t for decoration; they are designed to grip the hair and prevent the pin from sliding out.

How Hair Pins Create Invisible Hold

Hair pins work through simple physics and friction. When you insert one, the two prongs press together, creating tension that locks the pin around a hair section.

Think of it like a miniature staple for your hair, clamping strands securely. The ridged side grips the hair, while the smooth side faces out to slide easily against other pins or the scalp.

I see many clients push the pin in smooth-side-down, which offers almost no hold. Always insert a bobby pin with the ridged side facing your scalp for maximum grip. This small change prevents hairstyles from falling apart.

When Your Hair Pins Betray You

Hair pins fail for two main reasons: using the wrong size or overloading a single pin. A pin that is too short cannot grasp enough hair to create a stable anchor point.

Think of using a small pin on thick hair like trying to hold back a heavy curtain with a tiny tack. It simply does not have the capacity. I advise my clients with thicker hair to seek out longer, stronger “professional” grade pins.

Never try to secure a massive section of hair with just one or two pins. This places excessive tension on a small area. In my clinic, I see traction alopecia most often from tight, pin-heavy styles that pull constantly on the same follicles.

The Hidden Damage from Hair Pins

While incredibly useful, hair pins can cause breakage and scalp irritation if used incorrectly. The metal can snag and tear the hair’s outer cuticle layer, especially if you rip them out carelessly.

This friction damage weakens the hair strand over time, leading to split ends and frizz. I often find that clients who frequently wear tight updos secured with pins have more breakage around their hairline and crown.

To prevent this, always remove pins by following their U-shape backwards. Start by undoing the end, then gently pull it out along the same path it was inserted. Yanking it straight out is a sure way to rip your hair.

Choosing the Right Hair Pins for Your Texture

Not all hair pins are created equal, and your hair type dictates the best choice. Fine, silky hair needs the extra grip of a tightly-ridged bobby pin to prevent slipping.

Coarse or thick hair often requires longer, heavier-duty pins that can hold more weight without bending. For very textured or curly hair, spiral hair pins are fantastic as they twist into the curl pattern without disrupting it.

If you have fine hair that never holds a style, avoid plastic pins that lack grip. If you have coarse hair, standard short pins will bend and fail under the density.

Will Hair Pins Work For You?

Yes

  • If you need a discreet, non-damaging way to secure updos, buns, or braids.
  • When you want to tame flyaways or pin back specific sections without a bulky clip.
  • If you choose the correct pin size and strength for your hair’s density and texture.

No

  • If you have an active scalp condition like psoriasis or severe inflammation where pressure could cause discomfort.
  • When your hair is severely damaged or chemically treated to a gummy state, as pins can easily snap the weakened strands.
  • If you are looking for a tool to add volume or lift, as pins are designed for flattening and securing.

From My Experience

In my practice, the most common mistake is using hair pins as a primary grip for heavy, wet hair. This is a recipe for breakage. Always use them on hair that is at least 90% dry.

I have also observed that many people underestimate the number of pins needed. For a secure updo on medium-density hair, you might need 15-20 pins distributed evenly. Using too few forces each pin to work too hard, increasing the risk of slippage and localized tension.

My proprietary insight is to always cross two bobby pins over each other at the most vulnerable points of a style, like the base of a high ponytail. This creates an interlocking “X” that provides exponentially more hold than two pins placed side-by-side. It is a small trick that makes a world of difference for all-day security.
