What is Hair Loss?

Hair loss is a natural process where hair falls out from the scalp or body, often exceeding the normal daily shedding rate. It happens when your hair’s growth cycle gets disrupted, leading to thinner coverage or bald patches. Most people don’t realize that losing 50-100 hairs a day is completely normal and part of a healthy cycle.

I see many clients panic over normal shedding, but true hair loss involves a noticeable change in your hair’s density over time. The key is understanding why your hair’s growth and rest phases are out of balance. This disruption can stem from internal health issues, genetics, or external stressors on your hair and scalp.

When Hair Loss Starts at the Root

Hair loss often begins deep within the follicle, the tiny organ in your skin that grows hair. Think of the follicle like a factory for your hair strands. When this factory slows down or shuts down, hair production stops and the existing strand falls out.

In my clinic, the most common root cause I see is a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This hormone can shrink hair follicles over time, producing finer, shorter hairs with each growth cycle. Eventually, the follicle becomes so small it can’t produce a visible hair at all.

Other factors like inflammation, poor nutrient delivery, or physical stress can also damage the follicle’s ability to function. I always check for these underlying issues before recommending any treatment plan.

The Hair Loss and Shedding Confusion

Many people mistake excessive shedding for permanent hair loss. Shedding is when more hairs than usual enter the resting (telogen) phase and fall out. True hair loss (also called anagen effluvium or miniaturization) is when hairs don’t grow back properly.

Think of shedding like leaves falling from a tree in autumn—the tree itself is still healthy and will grow new leaves. True hair loss is like the tree’s branches getting weaker and producing fewer leaves each season. In my practice, about 70% of clients worried about “balding” are actually experiencing temporary shedding that will resolve on its own.

Common shedding triggers include illness, surgery, crash dieting, or emotional stress. The good news is that this type of hair loss is usually reversible once the trigger is removed. I guide patients through the 3-6 month recovery period when new growth typically appears.

How Hair Loss Changes Your Hair’s Structure

When hair loss progresses, the actual structure of your remaining hair changes. Follicles affected by pattern hair loss produce hairs with a smaller diameter and weaker protein structure. Think of a garden where some plants become stunted and produce smaller flowers each season.

Hair Loss Through the Life Cycle

Your hair grows in three distinct phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Hair loss occurs when this cycle gets shortened or disrupted. Normally, hairs spend 2-7 years in the growth phase, but with genetic hair loss, this period shrinks to just months or weeks.

Think of the hair cycle like a conveyor belt in a factory. When the belt speeds up, products don’t get finished properly before they’re shipped out. In hair loss, hairs don’t reach their full length or thickness before being shed.

I find this analogy helps patients understand why treatments take time—we’re trying to slow down that conveyor belt and give each hair adequate time to develop. Most people expect results in weeks, but it actually takes 3-6 months to see changes in the hair growth cycle.

From My Experience

In my clinical practice, I’ve developed what I call the “Three-Month Rule.” If you’re noticing increased shedding, monitor it for three months before panicking. Most temporary shedding resolves within this timeframe as your hair cycles reset. True progressive hair loss will continue steadily beyond this period.
