What is Hair Growth?

Hair growth is the natural process where your hair follicles produce new hair cells that push out old ones, creating longer strands. Think of your hair follicle like a tiny factory under your skin that’s always working.

This cycle happens in distinct phases that I’ll explain in a moment. Most people don’t realize that the hair you see is actually made of dead cells, which is why a haircut doesn’t hurt.

A surprising fact: Each follicle on your head is completely independent, growing and resting on its own schedule so you don’t shed all your hair at once.

How Hair Growth Actually Works

Your hair grows from a structure in the skin called a follicle. Inside the follicle’s base, the papilla, cells multiply rapidly to build the hair shaft.

Think of this like a 3D printer, where the papilla is the printer head and the hair shaft is the object being printed layer by layer. This process is fueled by the blood supply, which delivers oxygen and nutrients.

I see this when patients have poor circulation; their hair growth often slows down significantly. The health of this tiny organ directly dictates the health of the strand it produces.

The Hair Growth Cycle You Never See

Hair growth isn’t continuous; it operates on a three-part cycle. The active growth phase, or anagen phase, can last for several years.

This is followed by the catagen phase, a brief transitional period. Finally, the telogen phase is a rest period before the strand is shed and the cycle begins anew.

Think of it like a garden where some plants are actively growing, some are flowering, and others are dying back to make room for new growth. In my clinic, about 80% of clients misunderstand this cycle and mistake normal shedding for hair loss.

When Hair Growth Goes Wrong

Issues like chronic inflammation, excessive sebum, or product buildup can choke the follicle and impede growth. Think of a clogged pore on your face; a clogged follicle can’t function properly.
