Hair Growth Cycle: Phases of growth
What is Hair Growth Cycle?
Hair Growth Cycle is the natural process your hair follicles go through to grow, rest, and shed hair. It is a continuous loop that determines the length and health of every single strand on your head. Most people miss this: Your scalp is a garden where each follicle operates on its own unique schedule, completely independent of its neighbors.
This cycle is the reason your hair doesn’t all fall out at once. I see clients constantly surprised to learn that shedding 50-100 hairs a day is a normal, healthy sign that this cycle is working as it should.
When the Hair Growth Cycle Goes Into Overdrive
The Anagen phase is the active growth period of the cycle. Think of it like a factory working at full capacity, producing new hair cells non-stop. This phase can last anywhere from two to seven years, which determines your maximum potential hair length.
Your genetics largely decide how long your anagen phase lasts. I find that clients with very long hair typically have a longer anagen duration. During this time, the hair follicle is deeply rooted in the scalp, fed by a rich blood supply.

Around 90% of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase at any given time. When this phase is cut short by factors like stress or poor nutrition, you’ll notice your hair just won’t grow past a certain point.
When the Hair Growth Cycle Hits Pause
The Catagen phase is a brief transitional stage that acts as a shutdown signal for the hair follicle. Imagine a factory closing its doors for a short break; this phase lasts only about two weeks. The hair follicle shrinks and detaches from its blood supply during this time.
The lower part of the follicle is reabsorbed in this phase. I often explain to patients that this is the follicle’s way of preparing for a rest period before potentially starting the cycle over again.
Only about 1-3% of your hairs are in catagen at any moment. It’s a crucial reset button that many people don’t even know exists within their own scalp.
When the Hair Growth Cycle Takes a Vacation
The Telogen phase is the final resting period where the hair follicle is completely inactive. Think of it as a hibernating bear; the follicle is dormant and the hair strand is just hanging on by a thread. This phase typically lasts around three months.
At any given time, roughly 10% of your hairs are in this resting state. These are the hairs you see in your brush or shower drain during normal daily shedding. This is a completely natural part of the cycle.
I frequently counsel clients who panic over this shedding, not realizing it’s a healthy sign that new hair is preparing to grow. When this phase is disrupted, as in telogen effluvium, excessive shedding occurs.
How the Hair Growth Cycle Explains Daily Shedding
The Exogen phase is the actual shedding part of the cycle, where the old hair strand is released and falls out. Think of a tree losing its leaves in autumn to make way for new growth in the spring. This process makes room for a new hair to begin the anagen phase.
This is when you see hairs on your pillow, in your brush, or going down the shower drain. It’s perfectly normal to lose 50-100 hairs this way every single day. Your scalp is constantly renewing itself.
In my practice, I notice that people with longer hair often seem to shed more, but it’s usually the same number of hairs—they’re just more visible because of their length. This phase is a clear indicator that your cycle is functioning properly.
How the Hair Growth Cycle Gets Disrupted
Many factors can throw this delicate cycle off balance. Severe stress, crash dieting, illness, or hormonal changes can shock your system. This often pushes a larger percentage of hairs prematurely into the telogen resting phase.
Think of it like a power outage affecting many factories at once. The result is noticeable thinning or shedding about three months after the triggering event. This is why patients often can’t connect the cause with the effect.
Conditions like androgenetic alopecia gradually shorten the anagen growth phase over time. The follicle produces finer, shorter hairs with each cycle until it may stop producing visible hair altogether.
From My Experience
In my clinic, I’ve observed that most hair growth concerns stem from a disrupted cycle, not dead follicles. The single most impactful thing you can do is manage your stress levels, as cortisol directly interferes with the anagen growth phase. I’ve seen clients reverse significant shedding simply by adopting stress-reduction techniques.
Another key insight is the importance of scalp health. A clean, well-circulated scalp provides the optimal environment for follicles to progress through the cycle efficiently. Gentle massage and avoiding traction alopecia from tight styles can make a noticeable difference in maintaining cycle regularity.
Remember, patience is essential. Because of the long timeline of the hair growth cycle, any positive changes you make today won’t show visible results for three to six months. Consistency with a gentle hair care routine is far more effective than constantly switching products chasing a quick fix.
