Hair diameter is the thickness of a single strand of your hair. It is a core physical trait that determines your hair’s overall strength, volume, and how it responds to styling. Most people miss this: your hair diameter can change over your lifetime due to hormones, age, and even your health.

Why Hair Diameter Dictates Your Styling Results

Your hair’s thickness directly controls how it holds a style. Think of fine hair like a thin silk thread and coarse hair like a thick piece of yarn. The thicker the yarn, the more resistant it is to bending.

I see this constantly in my clinic. Clients with fine hair often complain that curls fall out quickly. This happens because a thin strand has less structural protein to hold a shape against gravity.

When Hair Diameter Changes Suddenly

The Hair Diameter and Porosity Connection

Thicker hair strands often have a more resilient cuticle layer, which can affect how your hair absorbs moisture. This relationship is crucial for choosing the right products. A coarse, thick strand might resist deep conditioning, while a fine strand can get waterlogged easily.

In my practice, I find that fine, high-porosity hair is the most fragile combination. The thin strand has less innate strength, and the raised cuticle makes it prone to losing moisture and breaking.

How to Measure Your Own Hair Diameter

You do not need a lab to get a good idea of your hair’s thickness. A simple method is the single strand test. Pluck one hair from your brush and roll it between your thumb and forefinger.

If you can barely feel it, you likely have fine hair. If you feel a distinct, robust strand, it is coarse. Most people fall into the medium category. I advise clients to test hair from different areas of the scalp, as diameter can vary.
