What is Hair Color?

Hair color is a cosmetic treatment that changes the pigment of your hair strands. It works by using chemical formulas to deposit new color molecules inside the hair’s inner core, called the cortex. This process can cover gray hairs, enhance your natural shade, or create a completely new look.

Most people don’t realize that the final color you see is actually an optical illusion. The underlying pigment of your natural hair and the artificial color you apply mix together to create the final result. I see this constantly in my practice when clients are surprised by a color that turns out warmer or cooler than they expected.

How Hair Color Penetrates Your Strands

Permanent hair color must open your hair’s outer cuticle layer to reach the cortex inside. Think of your hair cuticle like shingles on a roof that lift up to let the color in. The developer in the color formula creates this opening through a gentle chemical reaction.

Once inside, color molecules swell and lodge themselves permanently in the cortex. I always warn clients that this process is permanent because you’re altering the hair’s internal structure. About 60% of my patients don’t realize that even “gentle” permanent color still changes their hair’s fundamental composition.

Why Developer Volume Changes Everything

The developer’s volume, like 20 volume developer, determines how much your hair cuticle opens and how much natural pigment is removed. Higher volumes create more lift by removing your natural melanin, while lower volumes provide less lift but more deposit. This is the engine behind the color transformation.

Think of developer volume like the heat settings on an oven – higher numbers work faster and more aggressively. I’ve found that using too high a volume developer causes about 80% of the color damage cases I treat. The cuticle never fully closes again, leading to constant moisture loss and breakage.

The Surprising Truth About Color Fading

Color fading doesn’t happen because the artificial pigment escapes your hair. Those molecules are permanently trapped inside your cortex. Fading occurs because the natural underlying pigment continues to lighten from washing and sun exposure, changing how the artificial color reflects light.

Your hair’s porosity dramatically affects how color fades. High porosity hair from damage has a ragged cuticle that can’t hold onto color molecules well. In my clinic, I always do a porosity test before coloring to predict how long the result will last.

When Hair Color Causes Breakage

Chemical overload occurs when multiple processes target the same hair bonds simultaneously. Color, bleach, and perms all work on the disulfide bonds that give your hair strength. When these bonds are attacked from multiple angles, they can snap completely.

I never combine color with other chemical services on the same day in my practice. The cumulative damage creates weak points that travel up the hair shaft like a crack in glass. Once these bonds break, the damage is irreversible and the hair will eventually snap off.

From My Experience

Through my clinical work, I’ve developed what I call the “color compromise” principle. You can have any two of these three: dramatic color change, minimal damage, or low maintenance. But achieving all three simultaneously is biologically impossible given how hair structure works.

The most successful color clients in my practice are those who work with their hair’s natural limitations rather than fighting against them. Your hair’s starting level, underlying pigment, and condition create boundaries for what’s possible. Pushing beyond these boundaries always comes at the cost of your hair’s health.
