Foilayage is a hair coloring technique that combines the precise placement of foils with the soft, natural-looking effect of balayage. It uses aluminum foils to wrap select hair sections, which allows for controlled lightening and prevents the color from bleeding onto other strands.

This method gives you the best of both worlds: the brightness and lift of traditional highlights with the seamless, sun-kissed graduation of a hand-painted service. I find it creates incredible dimension that grows out beautifully without a harsh regrowth line.

From My Experience

Over the years, I’ve developed a simple test I do during every foilayage consultation. I call it the “elasticity check.” I take a single strand of hair from different areas of the head, wet it, and gently stretch it.

Hair with good elasticity will stretch about 30% and return to its original length. This tells me it can likely withstand the lightening process. Hair that snaps immediately is a red flag, and we must pivot to a gentler approach.
