What is Fading?

Fading is the gradual loss of color intensity and vibrancy from your hair over time. It’s a natural process where artificial dye molecules slowly wash out or break down, causing your color to look duller and less defined. Most people don’t realize that fading starts the very moment you rinse the color out of your hair in the salon.

Why Fading Attacks Your Color

Think of your hair’s outer layer, the cuticle, like shingles on a roof. When these shingles are lifted during coloring, dye gets inside. Fading happens as these shingles get damaged and can’t hold the color molecules in anymore. Your hair constantly loses color with every shampoo, swim, and sun exposure.

I see this daily in my practice. Clients using hot tools daily experience fading twice as fast as those who don’t. The heat literally bakes the color right out of the hair shaft.

The Fading Culprits in Your Shower
