What is Fade?

Fade is a haircutting technique that creates a gradual transition from very short hair to longer hair. It means a seamless blend where hair length changes incrementally, typically from the nape and sides up towards the top of the head.

Most people miss this: the technique was popularized by Black barbershops in the 1940s and 50s, becoming a cornerstone of cultural expression long before it hit the mainstream.

How a Fade Builds Its Signature Gradient

Your hair is cut using different clipper guard lengths to create the gradient effect. Think of it like stairs, where each step is a slightly longer length of hair.

The barber starts with the shortest guard at the bottom and switches to progressively longer guards as they move up. I see the most flawless fades when stylists use a flicking motion at the wrist to blur the lines between each guard length.

Why Your Fade Grows Out So Noticeably

The stark contrast in length is what makes a fade so sharp, but it is also why it grows out quickly. The shorter sections at the bottom catch up in length to the sections above them, blurring the defined line.

This is why your fresh fade can look untidy in just two weeks. In my clinic, I advise clients to schedule a trim every 2-3 weeks to maintain that crisp appearance.

The Fade’s Unexpected Impact on Hair Health

Constantly cutting the same areas so short can sometimes lead to issues. The repeated close clipping can cause ingrown hairs or irritation for some people, especially with coarse or curly hair types.
