Engineering Controls: Physical methods to reduce exposure to hazards

What is Engineering Controls?

Engineering controls are physical changes made to a workspace or tool that remove or reduce a health hazard right at its source. They work by isolating people from the danger rather than relying on personal protective equipment or safe work habits. In my trichology practice, I see this as the most effective first line of defense against occupational hazards that can damage hair and scalp health.

Most people miss this: The salon ventilation system quietly pulling chemical fumes away from your breathing zone is a perfect example of an engineering control in action. It protects without you even noticing it’s there.

How Engineering Controls Protect Your Scalp

Your scalp is a living, breathing organ that readily absorbs what’s around it. Think of it like a sponge that soaks up chemical vapors from color, relaxers, or perm solutions. These fumes can irritate the scalp and even disrupt the delicate follicle function over time.

I see this when patients who are stylists complain of persistent scalp redness and folliculitis. A proper ventilation system acts like a constant, gentle breeze, whisking those irritants away before they can settle and cause inflammation. This is far more reliable than just hoping a stylist remembers to wear gloves every single time.

Engineering Controls for Heat Damage

Excessive heat from styling tools doesn’t just fry the hair shaft; it can also cook the scalp. This thermal trauma can shock follicles and weaken the surrounding skin. Tools with precise, adjustable digital temperature controls are a form of engineering control.

They prevent the tool from ever reaching a dangerously high temperature that could cause a burn. In my clinic, I often recommend tools with automatic shut-off features to clients who are prone to forgetting they left a flat iron on. This simple engineering solution prevents catastrophic heat damage.

Why Engineering Controls Beat Repeated Warnings

Human behavior is inconsistent, but a well-designed machine is not. Relying on someone to always follow “safe handling” procedures is a gamble. An engineering control, like a spray bottle that creates a larger, wetter droplet that falls faster instead of a fine, breathable mist, is a smarter solution.

This design change minimizes the amount of airborne product that can be inhaled or settle on the skin. 80% of my clients who work with aerosols misunderstand how far those particles travel. The right equipment design solves this problem permanently.

Engineering Controls for Client Comfort and Safety

It’s not just about the stylist. Clients are also exposed to these same environmental hazards during a service. A well-maintained, modern backwash unit is a great example. It’s engineered to keep water at a consistent, safe temperature and pressure.

This prevents accidental scalds and ensures a comfortable experience. I’ve treated clients for contact dermatitis from residual chemical residue on poorly cleaned surfaces. Equipment designed for easy and thorough cleaning is an engineering control that protects everyone.

Will It Work For You?

Yes

  • If you work in a salon or frequently use chemical treatments and heat tools at home.
  • When you are sensitive to fumes or have a history of scalp irritation from products.
  • If you value long-term scalp health and want to minimize daily exposure to potential irritants.

No

  • If you are looking for a one-time, quick fix for an existing scalp condition.
  • When you are unwilling to invest in better-quality tools or support salon upgrades.
  • If your exposure to hair chemicals and heat is extremely rare and minimal.

From My Experience

The most common oversight I see in salons is neglecting the ventilation system. It’s out of sight, out of mind, but it’s the lungs of the operation. A high-quality system reduces airborne contaminants dramatically, which is crucial for everyone’s respiratory and dermal health.

I always advise my clients to ask their stylist about the tools they use. Tools with ceramic or tourmaline plates that heat evenly are an engineering control. They prevent hot spots that can cause immediate burn damage to the hair cuticle and the scalp beneath.

Finally, never underestimate the engineering of a good wide-tooth comb. Its design prevents the mechanical damage and breakage that a fine-tooth comb can cause on tangled hair. It’s a simple, brilliant piece of protective engineering that every bathroom should have.
