What are Eccrine Glands?

Eccrine glands are tiny sweat glands located all over your skin that produce a clear, odorless liquid to cool your body down. They are your body’s primary air conditioning system, releasing sweat directly onto the skin’s surface. Most people don’t realize these glands are completely separate from the oil-producing ones that affect your hair and scalp.

A surprising fact: Your scalp is packed with eccrine glands, but the sweat they produce is mostly water and doesn’t directly make your hair oily.

How Eccrine Glands Work on Your Scalp

Think of eccrine glands like millions of tiny sprinklers embedded in your scalp. When your body temperature rises, your brain signals these glands to release water and salts onto the skin.

This sweat then travels down your hair strands or evaporates directly from the scalp. I often see clients who mistake this sweat for greasy roots, leading them to overwash their hair.

Eccrine Glands and the Greasy Hair Confusion

Eccrine sweat itself is water-based and doesn’t cause grease. The real culprit for oily hair is sebum, the oil produced by sebaceous glands attached to each hair follicle.

When sweat and sebum mix on the scalp, it can create a slick feeling that many misinterpret. In my clinic, about 70% of people with fine hair struggle with this confusion and use the wrong products as a result.

The Eccrine Gland Workout Effect

During exercise, eccrine glands go into overdrive to prevent overheating. This sudden moisture surge can swell and slightly weaken the hair shaft temporarily, making it more prone to breakage when wet.

I always advise patients to use a soft, microfiber towel instead of rough cotton after a sweaty workout. Never brush soaking wet hair after sweating—it’s a recipe for snapage.

When Eccrine Glands Signal Bigger Problems

While normal sweating is healthy, a sudden change in scalp sweat can be a red flag. Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can create a constantly damp environment on the scalp.

This moisture can disrupt your scalp’s natural pH balance and lead to issues like fungal growth or irritation. If you notice a dramatic increase in scalp sweat, it’s worth discussing with a dermatologist.

From My Experience

Through my practice, I’ve developed a simple test to distinguish sweat from oil. Blot your scalp with a white paper towel immediately after feeling dampness.

If the mark is clear and waterspot-like, it’s likely eccrine sweat. A yellow, greasy stain indicates sebum. This helps you decide if you need a quick rinse or a full shampoo.

I also find that clients with high porosity hair often feel their sweat more acutely, as the moisture is rapidly absorbed into their strands. For them, a light, pH-balancing mist can be a game-changer on humid days instead of repeatedly washing.
