What is Dry Brittle Hair?

Dry brittle hair is a hair condition where strands lose their natural moisture and oils. This makes them feel rough, look dull, and snap off easily.

Think of a healthy hair strand like a flexible straw. It can bend and move without breaking. Dry brittle hair is like a dried-out, old straw that cracks and snaps with the slightest pressure.

Most people miss this: Your hair doesn’t actually produce oils. The scalp does. When those natural oils can’t travel down the hair shaft effectively, dryness sets in from the mid-lengths to the ends first.

Why Your Hair’s Natural Shield Fails

Your hair has a protective outer layer called the cuticle. It’s made of tiny, overlapping scales, like shingles on a roof.

When these scales lie flat, they lock in moisture and protect the inner core. Heat styling, chemical processing, and even rough brushing can force these scales to lift up and break off.

I see this constantly in my clinic. Once the cuticle is damaged, the inner cortex loses its hydration. This is the beginning of brittleness. The hair becomes porous and vulnerable.

The Surprising Role of Water Temperature

Many clients believe a hot shower opens the cuticle for deep conditioning. This is a dangerous half-truth.

While warmth can help, extreme heat does the opposite of what you want. It strips essential lipids and can actually cause something called “bubble hair,” where steam forms within the strand itself, creating weak points.

I advise my patients to wash with lukewarm water. Think of it like defrosting meat gently instead of throwing it in a scalding pan. You avoid shocking the structure.

How Protein Overload Creates Brittle Hair

It sounds counterintuitive, but too much of a good thing can cause this issue. Many strengthening treatments are protein-based.

Hair needs a balance of moisture and protein. When you overload with protein, the hair shaft becomes rigid and inflexible. It loses its ability to stretch under tension, leading to breakage.

When Hard Water Turns Hair to Straw
