Double process is a hair coloring technique that uses two separate chemical steps to achieve a light or bright hair color. It first lifts your natural pigment with bleach and then deposits a new color with toner or dye. Most people don’t realize that the first bleach step doesn’t just remove color; it fundamentally alters the hair’s structure, making it permanently more porous and fragile.

Why Double Process Demands Two Steps

Your natural hair color comes from melanin pigment deep inside the cortex. Think of melanin like a stubborn stain on a white shirt. A single process color can only stain over a darker stain, which often leads to muddy or brassy results.

Bleach in the first step is the only chemical strong enough to break down and remove that deep-set melanin stain.
