What is Double Process Color?

Double Process Color is a hair coloring technique that uses two separate chemical steps to achieve a dramatically lighter hair color. It first lifts your natural pigment with bleach and then deposits a new color toner or dye. Most people don’t realize that the initial bleach lift can expose up to seven different underlying warm and cool tones that must be carefully managed.

I see this as the most transformative but also the most demanding color service for your hair’s structure.

Why Double Process Color Demands Two Steps

Your natural hair color comes from melanin pigment deep inside the cortex. Lightening this pigment is a chemical reaction, not just a simple stain. Think of it like trying to paint a white wall a pastel color; you must first prime it with a white base coat.

The first process, bleaching, is that primer. It oxidizes and removes your natural melanin. The second process, toning or coloring, is the actual paint that gives you the precise, beautiful shade you want. I find that nearly all color mishaps with blonde results from rushing or combining these two distinct steps.

The Double Process Color Chemical Reaction

Bleach works by swelling the hair cuticle and breaking apart melanin molecules inside the cortex. This process requires a high-volume developer, often 30 or 40 volume, to generate enough lift. Your hair’s porosity skyrockets after this step, which is why the second process is crucial.

The toner then deposits color into this newly created, porous space. It neutralizes any unwanted brassy or yellow tones left behind by the bleach. I always explain to my clients that toner doesn’t lighten; it simply corrects and refines the canvas that bleach creates.

Who Should Avoid Double Process Color

I dissuade clients with previously relaxed hair or those with extensive existing color from undergoing this treatment. The cumulative damage is often too great. The integrity of the hair must always come before the desired color result.

In my practice, the clients most thrilled with their double process color are those who fully understand the commitment. They invest in weekly deep conditioning and use heat protectants without fail. The surprising insight I share is that the toner applied in the second step will fade, but the lightened base from the bleach is permanent.

This means your regrowth will be very distinct, and you will need regular touch-ups. I never recommend a double process without a clear plan for the grow-out phase. The health of the new hair at your roots is paramount, and overlapping bleach on previously lightened hair is the fastest route to severe damage.
