What are Disulfide Bonds?

Disulfide bonds are a type of chemical connection that holds the protein structure of your hair together. They are the strongest bonds in your hair, acting like tiny, resilient bridges that give each strand its shape, strength, and elasticity.

Most people don’t realize that these bonds are the precise reason a perm or chemical relaxer can permanently change your hair’s texture. The process strategically breaks and then reforms these bridges into a new pattern.

How Disulfide Bonds Build Your Hair’s Strength

Your hair is primarily built from a protein called keratin. Think of keratin like a long, twisted rope made of amino acids. Disulfide bonds are the cross-links that tie different parts of this rope together, creating a strong, three-dimensional network.

This network is what prevents your hair from stretching endlessly or snapping easily. I see this strength in the clinic when healthy hair can withstand a significant amount of tension before breaking, a direct result of intact disulfide bonds.

Why Chemical Services Target Disulfide Bonds

Chemical treatments like perms, relaxers, and even some high-lift colorants work by deliberately breaking disulfide bonds. They use reducing agents, like ammonium thioglycolate in perms, to sever these sulfur bridges.

Once the bonds are broken, the hair becomes soft and malleable. It can be reshaped around a perm rod or straightened smooth. A neutralizer is then applied to stop the process and re-form the bonds, locking the new shape into place.

This is a permanent change until new hair grows in. I always warn clients that over-processing happens when these bonds are broken too many times or too severely, leading to irreversible damage.

The Surprising Fragility of Disulfide Bonds

While they are incredibly strong, disulfide bonds are also vulnerable. Everyday heat styling from flat irons and blow dryers provides enough energy to break them down over time, leading to gradual weakness and loss of shape.

Disulfide Bonds vs. Other Hair Bonds

It’s crucial to understand that disulfide bonds are not the only bonds in your hair. They coexist with weaker hydrogen bonds and salt bonds. Think of hydrogen bonds like temporary hooks that are broken by water and heat but reform as hair dries.

This is why you can temporarily set a wave with water and rollers. Disulfide bonds are the permanent anchors. Over 80% of my clients confuse temporary style changes from wetting the hair with the permanent alteration of disulfide bonds.

In my practice, the health of a client’s disulfide bonds is the single biggest predictor of how well their hair will tolerate chemical services. I use a simple elasticity test during a consultation to assess their condition before any treatment is approved.

I’ve developed a proprietary insight: if hair stretches more than 50% of its original length and doesn’t return, the disulfide bonds are severely compromised. This hair is not a candidate for any chemical service and needs intensive protein treatment and bond repair first.
