What are Disulfide Bonds (Hair)?

Disulfide bonds are a type of strong chemical connection that gives your hair its strength, shape, and structure. Think of them like the steel beams inside a skyscraper, holding everything together and providing support. Most people don’t realize that these tiny bonds are the sole reason your hair can hold a curl or a straight style after a chemical treatment.

These bonds form between sulfur atoms found within the hair’s protein structure, specifically in the cortex, which is the hair’s inner core. When these bonds are intact, your hair is strong and resilient. When they are broken and reset, your hair’s shape can be permanently changed, which is the basis for perms and relaxers.

How Disulfide Bonds Create Your Hair’s Shape

Your hair’s natural curl pattern is determined by the number and placement of these disulfide bonds. An asymmetrical distribution of bonds causes the hair fiber to bend and curve, creating waves or curls. A straight hair shaft has a more symmetrical and uniform arrangement of these bonds along its length.

I see this clearly under the microscope; curly hair has a wildly irregular pattern of bonds, while straight hair looks orderly. This is why your natural texture is so unique to you—it’s literally written in your hair’s protein structure.

Why Bleach and Relaxers Break Disulfide Bonds

Chemical processes like bleaching, relaxing, and perming work by deliberately breaking these disulfide bonds. Alkaline agents in these products swell the hair cuticle, allowing chemicals to penetrate the cortex and sever the sulfur-to-sulfur connections. This process softens the hair, making it pliable enough to be reshaped.

Think of it like melting the solder between two pieces of metal so you can bend them into a new position. Once the hair is reshaped—whether straightened or curled—a neutralizer is applied to stop the chemical process and reform new, stable disulfide bonds in this new configuration.

This is a permanent change. The hair will stay in that new shape until new growth comes in or the bonds are broken again by another chemical service.

The Hidden Damage from Broken Disulfide Bonds

Every time these bonds are broken chemically, some of them do not properly reform. This leads to cumulative damage, making the hair weaker, more porous, and prone to breakage over time. The hair loses its tensile strength because its internal support system has been compromised.

Can You Repair Disulfide Bonds?
