What is Diffusion Coefficient?

Diffusion coefficient is a scientific measure that quantifies how quickly a substance moves through another substance. It tells you the rate at which molecules, like water or dye, spread out and penetrate into the hair shaft from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Most people miss this: Your hair’s porosity dramatically alters its diffusion coefficient, meaning high porosity hair can absorb product too fast, leading to uneven results and damage.

How Diffusion Coefficient Dictates Your Hair’s Thirst

Your hair absorbs moisture and chemicals based on its internal diffusion rate. Think of your hair’s cortex like a sponge; a high diffusion coefficient means it soaks up everything quickly, while a low one means it resists absorption.

I see this when patients with high porosity hair complain their hair feels wet for hours but dry and brittle later. The moisture rushed in but also evaporated out just as fast because the cuticle was too open to hold it.

The Hidden Role of Diffusion Coefficient in Chemical Disasters

Chemical processes like coloring or relaxing rely entirely on controlling diffusion. The developer’s job is to force color molecules through the cuticle and into the cortex at a specific, controlled speed.

When this process goes too quickly due to a high diffusion coefficient from prior damage, it causes breakage. I always tell my clients, the condition of your hair dictates the safety of any chemical service, not the product alone.

Never combine high-porosity hair with high-volume developer—it causes immediate protein degradation and mushy hair in my clinic.

Why Your Weather App is a Diffusion Coefficient Report

Humidity in the air directly impacts the diffusion of water molecules in and out of your hair shaft. On a humid day, the high concentration of water vapor in the air forces its way into your hair, expanding the shaft and causing frizz.

Think of it like a crowded room where people are constantly moving in and out. 80% of my clients misunderstand that frizz isn’t just a texture issue; it’s a real-time demonstration of water diffusion happening on their heads.

From My Experience

In my practice, I’ve observed that hair with a history of lightening often has an artificially high diffusion coefficient. The cuticle is so compromised that it loses its ability to regulate what passes through.

This is why I developed a pre-treatment assessment that estimates diffusion rates. For these clients, I use larger, heavier molecules like hydrolyzed proteins as a protective barrier to slow down uptake and prevent further damage, ensuring treatments work evenly without causing more harm.
