Diffusing: Using diffuser attachment to dry curls gently
What is Diffusing?
Diffusing is a hair drying technique that uses a special blow dryer attachment to gently dry curly or wavy hair while enhancing its natural texture. It disperses air over a wider area at a lower speed and heat to prevent frizz and maintain curl formation. Think of it like a gentle breeze drying your hair instead of a harsh, focused gust of wind.
Most people don’t realize that diffusing isn’t just about drying; it’s a form of heat styling that, when done correctly, can actually be less damaging than air drying for some hair types. I often see clients whose hair takes hours to air dry, and that prolonged wetness can swell and stress the hair shaft, leading to breakage.
Why Diffusing Defeats Frizz
Frizz is essentially stray hairs reacting to humidity by absorbing moisture from the air. Your hair’s cuticle, its outer layer, lifts up and creates a rough, fuzzy texture. A diffuser tackles this by drying the hair in a controlled, even manner without disrupting the curl clumps.
Think of your hair’s cuticle like shingles on a roof. High-speed blow-drying blows those shingles wide open. Diffusing keeps them lying flat. I always advise my clients to use the cool shot button at the end to seal the cuticle shut, locking in definition and shine.

When Diffusing Damages Your Curls
Diffusing can backfire if you use high heat for too long or touch your curls too much while drying. Excessive heat saps moisture from the inner core of the hair, called the cortex, making it brittle. Constantly scrunching with your hands creates friction and breaks up your natural curl pattern.
I see this damage frequently in my practice. The hair feels dry and straw-like, and the curls look ragged instead of defined. The key is to use low heat, hold the diffuser still, and let your hair rest in the bowl without constant manipulation.
The Diffuser Attachment That Changes Everything
The diffuser attachment itself is a wide, shallow bowl with prongs or fingers extending from its surface. These prongs are designed to separate and support curls as they dry, allowing air to flow around them instead of blasting them apart. This design is crucial for preserving your hair’s natural shape.
Think of the prongs like the pillars of a building, providing structure and support during the drying process. A common mistake is using a diffuser without the prongs, which is just a wide nozzle and doesn’t provide the same curl-defining benefits. In my clinic, I always recommend a prong-style diffuser for the best results.
Diffusing for Different Curl Types
Not all hair benefits from the same diffusing technique. Tighter coil patterns, like type 4 hair, often need a more gentle approach with consistent low heat to avoid shrinkage and maintain moisture. Looser waves might handle a bit more heat and movement to add volume at the root.
I categorize this based on your hair’s porosity and density, not just the curl type. High porosity hair, which absorbs water quickly but loses it just as fast, needs a gentler touch to prevent moisture loss during drying. The technique must be tailored.
Will It Work For You?
Yes
- If you have naturally wavy, curly, or coily hair patterns.
- When your goal is to enhance your natural texture and reduce frizz.
- If you have fine hair that needs volume but gets easily weighed down by product.
No
- If your hair is pin-straight (Type 1), as it has no natural curl to enhance.
- When your hair is already severely damaged or chemically processed to the point of extreme brittleness.
- If you are dealing with an actively inflamed or sensitive scalp condition.
From My Experience
In my trichology practice, I’ve found that the “hovering” technique yields the healthiest results. Instead of pressing the diffuser into your hair, simply hover the diffuser around your head, allowing the air to dry your curls without any physical pressure. This minimizes manipulation and maximizes definition.
Many clients come to me with breakage they attribute to diffusing, but it’s often from the technique, not the tool itself. They scrunch aggressively with high heat. I teach them to cup sections of hair into the diffuser, hold it still for a minute on low heat and low speed, then move on. Patience is the secret ingredient most people skip.
The most surprising insight I share is that for some, diffusing can be less damaging than air drying. If you have high porosity or low porosity hair that stays wet for hours, the prolonged water exposure can weaken the hair shaft. A quick, gentle diffuse can actually protect the structural integrity of the hair by reducing the time it spends in a vulnerable, swollen state.
