What is Development Time?

Development time is the specific period a chemical hair product, like color or relaxer, needs to sit on your hair to achieve its intended result. It is a critical window that allows active ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft and create a permanent change. Think of it like baking a cake; you need the right amount of time for the ingredients to react and set properly.

Most people miss this: The clock starts the second the product touches the first section of hair, not when you finish applying it. I see many clients who time from the end of application, which often leads to underprocessed roots and overprocessed ends. This uneven development is a primary cause of damage and inconsistent color in my clinic.

Why Development Time Dictates Your Hair’s Fate

Your hair’s cortex, its inner core, must be accessed by the product’s active ingredients. Development time is the duration these chemicals have to break through the cuticle layer and alter the hair’s internal structure. If the time is too short, the change is incomplete; if it’s too long, the structural damage can be severe.

Think of your hair’s cuticle like a locked door. The developer is the key that unlocks it, and development time is how long the door stays open. I always remind my patients that leaving that door open too long invites lasting damage. The hair’s proteins can become so compromised that they leach out, leading to a mushy, weak feel.

The Hidden Factors That Warp Development Time

Ambient temperature and your body heat significantly alter how quickly processing occurs. A warm salon or a hot scalp can accelerate the chemical reaction, shortening the effective development time needed. Conversely, a cold room can slow it down dramatically.

Your hair’s porosity is the biggest variable. High porosity hair, which is more damaged, has a wide-open cuticle and will process much faster. Low porosity hair with a tight cuticle layer resists processing and often requires the full recommended time. I estimate 70% of at-home color mishaps I see are due to not accounting for porosity.

Development Time’s Dangerous Domino Effect

Exceeding the development time creates a cascade of structural failure within the hair shaft. The disulfide bonds, which give hair its strength, are broken and cannot properly reassemble. This leads to a loss of elasticity, where hair stretches but doesn’t bounce back, eventually snapping.

Once these bonds are over-processed, the damage is irreversible. The hair becomes hyper-porous, sucking up too much moisture from the air on humid days and causing frizz, or losing moisture rapidly in dry conditions, leading to brittleness. You must always perform a strand test 24 hours before any full application. This is the only way to gauge how your unique hair will react to the product within the recommended development time frame. It reveals your hair’s true porosity and current state of health.

Never assume the box time is your time. Fine hair processes faster than coarse hair. Virgin hair processes slower than previously colored hair. I have my clients track their strand test results and processing times in a hair journal to create their personal benchmark for future services.
