Why Your Hair’s Dehydration Rate Creates Frizz

Think of your hair like a piece of driftwood. A dry piece will immediately soak up water and become rough. Your hair does the same thing when it’s dehydrated. I test this rate in my clinic by weighing a hair sample and monitoring its weight loss in a controlled environment.

Your hair is constantly trying to reach equilibrium with the air around it. In dry air, it must release its water vapor to match. This is why your same routine can fail when you travel—the dehydration rate of your hair has completely changed.

I advise my clients to adjust their product consistency with the seasons. A rich cream that works in humid summer air will be useless against the brutal dehydration rate of winter, when you need a humectant-free sealant.

Slowing Down a Rushed Dehydration Rate

You can actively slow your hair’s dehydration rate with strategic product selection. The key is using humectants in humid conditions and sealants in dry conditions to manage the water exchange.

Think of it as putting a lid on that sponge. Ingredients like shea butter or dimethiconol create a flexible seal over the cuticle. This barrier dramatically slows the rate at which water molecules can evaporate from inside the hair shaft.

I never recommend heavy oils for low porosity clients. Their dehydration rate is already slow, and adding a sealant can lead to buildup and prevent any moisture from getting in, creating a different set of problems.

In my practice, I’ve developed a simple test to visualize dehydration rate for my clients. I place a single strand on a paper towel and watch how quickly a faint water ring forms around it. A fast-forming ring indicates a high dehydration rate—the hair is losing its water content rapidly.
