What is Deep Wave?

Deep Wave is a type of curly hair texture that forms tight, well-defined S-shaped waves with a consistent pattern from root to tip. It is a popular choice for hair extensions and weaves because it creates a voluminous, bouncy look with a lot of texture and body. Most people miss this: the pattern is so uniform that it often mimics the look of a natural, dense head of curls achieved with a perm.

How Deep Wave Hair Gets Its Pattern

The signature wave is created by steaming and setting processed human hair onto large, curved rods. Think of the process like pressing a ribbon onto a corkscrew; it takes on that shape and holds it. The heat and moisture temporarily break the hair’s internal bonds, allowing it to be reshaped into the deep S-pattern before cooling and resetting.

I see this most often with high-quality Remy hair, where the cuticle is intact and aligned. This alignment is crucial for the wave to look smooth and not frizzy. When the cuticles are all facing the same direction, the light reflects evenly, giving the hair its characteristic shine.

Why Deep Wave Feels Different

Deep Wave hair typically has a coarser feel than a silky straight texture. This is because the constant bending of the hair strand creates more surface area that you can feel. Your fingers detect every curve and turn in the fiber, which translates to a textured, almost cottony feel.

In my clinic, I always recommend a good leave-in conditioner for this hair type. The bends in the wave pattern make it harder for natural oils from the scalp to travel down the entire strand, so the ends can dry out faster without help.

Maintaining the Deep Wave Bounce

Maintenance is key to preventing the waves from drooping or becoming frizzy. You must keep the hair moisturized but avoid heavy products that can weigh the curls down and stretch them out. Light, water-based moisturizers and sealing with a light oil work best to maintain the pattern’s integrity.

Deep Wave sits between a loose body wave and a tight curly pattern. It has more definition and a tighter pattern than a body wave but is not as compact and coily as a curl pattern like a water wave. The wave size is consistent, which is what gives it that uniform, glamorous look.

Many clients come to me confused about the difference. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the shape of the S. A deep wave has a pronounced, deep S that is about the width of a marker, while other patterns are wider or much tighter.
