What is Cuticle Layer?

Cuticle layer is the outermost protective shield of your hair shaft that seals in moisture and keeps damage out. It is made of overlapping, transparent cells that act like shingles on a roof. Most people miss this: a single strand’s cuticle can have up to 12 layers of these tiny, protective scales.

When these “shingles” lie flat, your hair looks shiny and feels smooth. When they lift or break, your hair becomes dull, tangles easily, and loses its internal moisture. I see this damage daily in clients who use high heat or harsh chemicals without proper protection.

How Bleach Lifts the Cuticle Layer

Bleach forces the cuticle scales to swell open so chemicals can enter. This process strips your hair’s natural pigment from the inner cortex. Think of it like prying open a locked door to remove the contents inside.
