Curl type is a classification system that describes the natural shape and pattern of your hair strands. It ranges from straight to coily based on the curvature of each individual hair fiber. Most people miss this: your curl type can actually change over your lifetime due to hormones, health, and even climate.

How Curl Type Forms in the Follicle

The shape of your hair follicle determines your curl type. Think of it like a pasta maker—straight follicles produce straight hair, while curved or oval-shaped follicles create curls.

Your hair forms its curl pattern deep within the skin. I see this when examining scalp biopsies under magnification—the follicle’s architecture dictates everything.

Why Curl Type Changes With Humidity

Hydrogen bonds in your hair temporarily break and reform with water exposure. This is why humidity can make straight hair frizz and curly hair expand.
