What is Cradle Cap?

Cradle Cap is a harmless scalp condition where greasy, yellowish scales form on babies’ heads. It happens when overactive oil glands trap dead skin cells. Think of it like sticky honey gluing flakes together on the scalp.

Most parents don’t realize it’s technically infant seborrheic dermatitis. Surprisingly, it can sometimes appear behind ears or on eyebrows too. I see this in about 50% of infants during clinic visits.

Why Cradle Cap Clings On

Your baby’s oil glands work overtime due to lingering maternal hormones. This excess sebum acts like glue, trapping dead skin cells instead of letting them shed. Imagine wet leaves sticking to a sidewalk after rain.

I often find parents try scrubbing scales off aggressively. This actually worsens inflammation. Gentle care works better than force.

The Cradle Cap and Weather Connection

Cold, dry air can make scales thicker and flakier. Humidity sometimes improves it by softening crusts. Think how dried glue peels easier when moistened.

When Cradle Cap Spreads Beyond Scalp
