Conjugated System is a chain of atoms in a molecule with alternating single and double bonds. This setup lets electrons move freely along the chain, changing how the molecule interacts with light. Most don’t realize that your natural hair color comes from melanin’s conjugated system – break it with bleach, and you get that brassy yellow.

Why Your Hair Color Fades Without Conjugated Systems

Without stable conjugated systems in dye molecules, color fades quickly. The electrons in the conjugated bonds absorb and reflect specific light wavelengths, giving your hair vibrant shades. Think of conjugated bonds like a highway for electrons – when the highway is smooth, color stays vibrant.

I see clients with faded direct dyes because the conjugated system wasn’t protected. Sun exposure and chlorine attack these bonds, draining color intensity fast.

How Conjugated Systems Make Permanent Hair Color Stick

Permanent dyes form new conjugated systems inside your hair shaft. They use developers to create bonds that hold larger color molecules within the cortex. It’s like building a new electron highway under your hair’s surface.

I always check for existing damage before coloring. Broken disulfide bonds can’t support new conjugated systems, leading to patchy results. That’s why compromised hair often rejects dye unevenly.

Conjugated Systems in Your Natural Hair Pigment

Melanin has conjugated systems that determine brown, black, or red hues. The longer the conjugated chain, the darker your hair. Eumelanin has extensive chains for deep browns, while pheomelanin’s shorter systems create red tones.

Longer conjugated systems are like bigger trampolines that catch more light waves. I’ve noticed redheads fade faster in sun – their shorter pheomelanin chains break more easily than eumelanin’s robust networks.

From My Experience

In my clinic, I use UV filters on color-treated hair to protect conjugated systems. It prevents fading better than sulfate-free shampoo alone. I also test hair’s bond integrity before any oxidative color service – weak disulfide bonds mean the conjugated dye network will fail.
