Complementary colours are pairs that sit directly opposite each other on the colour wheel. They create maximum contrast and neutralize each other when mixed. Think of them like puzzle pieces that cancel out unwanted tones – green counteracts red, blue balances orange, and purple offsets yellow. Here’s what surprises my clients: Your natural hair pigment follows these rules too – underlying warm orange must be neutralized with cool blue before achieving platinum blonde.

Why Complementary Colours Fix Brassy Disasters

Brassy orange tones appear when hair’s warm underlying pigment isn’t properly neutralized during lightening. Complementary blue cancels this orange through colour theory physics. Imagine pouring blue paint into orange paint – they mix to create a neutral brown.
