What are Coils?

Coils are the tightest curl pattern found in natural hair, forming distinct spring-like ringlets or corkscrews. They are a defining characteristic of Type 4 hair textures, like 4c hair, and create significant volume due to their springy structure. Surprisingly, the tighter the coil, the more length appears compressed when dry – what looks like 2 inches stretched might actually be 8 inches coiled!

Why Coils Crave Constant Hydration

Think of a coil like a narrow spiral staircase. Natural oils produced on your scalp struggle to travel down the entire length of these tight spirals the way they can slide down straighter hair. This leaves the middle and ends of your coiled strands particularly vulnerable to dryness. I see many clients with beautiful coils who mistake this dryness for breakage when it’s simply a lack of moisture reaching those areas.

Using humectants like glycerin or honey-based products can help coils attract moisture from the air. But in dry climates, these might need balancing with sealing oils to lock that moisture in. Heavy oils alone often just sit on top without penetrating where coiled hair needs it most.

The Shrinkage Surprise Explained

Shrinkage is the dramatic shortening of hair length when coiled hair dries naturally from its stretched state. It happens because each coil contracts back to its natural spring shape. Think of it like a slinky compressing – the hair hasn’t disappeared, it’s just coiled up tight! I find 80% of my clients with coils initially worry their hair “isn’t growing” because of shrinkage, not realizing it’s a sign of healthy elasticity.

Measuring growth on coiled hair requires consistently stretching a section when dry. Techniques like finger coils or shingling temporarily define the coil pattern but don’t reduce true shrinkage. Embrace the bounce – it’s your hair’s superpower!

Coil Strength vs. Fragility

Coils boast impressive natural strength due to their complex internal structure. However, that same intricate shape creates points along the strand where stress concentrates, especially during detangling or styling. Dry, under-moisturized coils are far more prone to snapping at these points than well-hydrated ones. Never detangle dry coils; always use generous slip from conditioners or detanglers.

I advise starting detangling from the very tips, working slowly upwards to the roots with fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Forcing a comb through a knot from the root down is a surefire way to cause breakage in coiled textures. Patience and lubrication are non-negotiable.

From My Experience

In my clinic, the biggest mistake I see with coiled hair is over-manipulation. Constant styling, tight braids, excessive combing – it all adds stress. Coils thrive with low-manipulation routines and protective styles that tuck the ends away. I also notice clients often use products far too heavy for their actual density, leading to buildup that blocks moisture.

One key insight: Coil diameter matters. Tighter, smaller diameter coils (like common in 4c hair) often have more fragility points along their length compared to slightly larger coils. This means they generally need even more gentle handling and consistent deep conditioning. Finding the right balance of moisture and lightweight protein is crucial – too much protein makes them brittle, too little leaves them weak. Listen to how your hair feels.
