What is Chain Transfer?

Chain Transfer is a chemical handoff process that redirects growing polymer chains during hair treatments. It happens when an active chain stops building and passes its reactive power to another molecule instead. Think of it like a relay race baton pass – it changes which molecule continues the reaction.

Most don’t realize this occurs constantly during perms and relaxers. Each transfer event subtly influences your hair’s final structure and strength. It’s why identical processing times can yield different results on different heads.

Chain Transfer in Perm Solutions

When perm lotions break hair bonds, chain transfer reactions control how fast proteins reconnect. The perm solution contains transfer agents like ammonium thioglycolate that grab and redirect chemical activity. This prevents over-processing in one spot.

I’ve seen clients with resistant hair need formulas with optimized transfer agents. Without them, their cuticles stay rigid instead of reshaping evenly. Proper transfer balances rearrangement speed throughout the strand.

Chain Transfer’s Humidity Surprise

Humid environments accelerate chain transfer reactions in treated hair. Water molecules act like extra transfer agents, causing more frequent handoffs between keratin chains. This explains why humid days make chemically treated hair revert faster.

In my clinic, 60% of clients with summer frizz issues had recent chemical services. Their reformatted bonds became unstable through increased transfer activity. I now recommend anti-humidity sealants after any bond-altering treatment.

Chain Transfer vs. Breakage
