What is C Strand (Coarse)?

C Strand (Coarse) is a hair texture classification describing strands with the thickest individual diameter. Think of each coarse hair like a sturdy rope that resists bending easily. Surprisingly, coarse hair often has a hidden hollow center called the medulla that acts like insulation, making it slow to heat up but also slow to cool down.

This medulla layer traps air inside the hair’s core. I see clients shocked when their coarse hair takes longer to dry or style than fine-haired friends. That hollow center affects everything from heat response to chemical processing times.

Why C Strand Hair Tangles Less But Breaks More

Coarse hair strands are spaced farther apart on the scalp compared to finer types. Think of coarse hair like tall trees in a forest with wide spacing. Less crowding means fewer chances for strands to knot together during daily movement.

But when coarse hair does break, it snaps dramatically. I measure strand diameter in my clinic – coarse hairs are 50% wider than medium strands. That thickness makes them stiff. When bent sharply at weak points like old highlights, they fracture cleanly like a thick pencil.

The Humidity Surprise for Coarse Strands

Coarse hair resists frizz because its thick cuticle layer shields the inner cortex. Imagine roof shingles layered tightly over a house. This smooth outer armor blocks moisture from swelling the hair shaft quickly.

Yet once humidity penetrates, coarse hair becomes unmanageably heavy. In my practice, clients with coarse textures report sudden “helmet hair” during rainy seasons. The weight comes from trapped moisture expanding that hollow medulla space we discussed earlier.

Coarse Hair’s Hidden Porosity Secret
