Bleach retouch is a hair lightening technique that targets only your new root growth. It reapplies bleach to regrowth areas while avoiding previously lightened lengths. This maintains consistent blonde or lightened color as your natural hair grows out.

Most people miss this: Your scalp produces natural oils that protect roots during retouches, while mid-lengths become more vulnerable with each process. I see clients who bleach their entire head every time suffer significantly more breakage than those who strictly retouch roots.

Why Bleach Retouch Timing is Everything

Apply bleach retouch when roots are ¼ to ½ inch long – about 4-8 weeks after your last session. Shorter roots won’t give enough surface area for even lifting. Longer roots risk a visible “band” of darker hair.

I keep cotton strips around hairlines to absorb moisture. If your scalp stings, remove bleach immediately – don’t “push through.” Think of bleach like fire: Controlled application lightens hair, but uncontrolled spread destroys it.

From My Experience
