What is Beveling?

Beveling is a hair cutting technique that angles the shears diagonally to create tapered, textured ends instead of blunt lines. This method removes bulk while maintaining length and adds movement to the hair. What surprises many is that beveling actually strengthens the hair shaft by preventing split ends from traveling up like a zipper unraveling.

Why Beveling Banishes Bulk

Thick hair often feels heavy and shapeless when cut straight across. Beveling slices hair at 45-degree angles to thin out dense sections without shortening length. Think of it like sharpening a pencil – you’re removing wood but keeping the point long and defined.

I see this transform boxy bobs into fluid shapes for 80% of my thick-haired clients. Never combine beveling with razor cutting though – it causes excessive fraying in coarse textures.

When Beveling Betrays Fine Hair

Over-beveling fine hair creates see-through ends that resemble split feathers. The technique removes necessary density at the perimeter, making hair appear sparse. I measure strand density first – if more than 30% slips through my fingers during a ponytail test, I avoid heavy beveling.
