What is Albinism?

Albinism is a genetic condition where your body produces little to no melanin, the pigment that colors your skin, eyes, and hair. This happens because of inherited mutations affecting enzymes involved in melanin synthesis. Surprisingly, even though people with albinism have very light hair, their hair structure is identical to pigmented hair – it’s just missing its natural colorant.

Albinism’s Impact on Hair Vulnerability

Without melanin, albinism-affected hair loses its built-in UV defense. Think of melanin like nature’s sunscreen for each strand. I see patients with albinism experience UV damage faster than others, leading to extreme dryness.

Your hair cuticle becomes brittle when unprotected. This makes strands snap easily during brushing. In my clinic, I recommend UV-protectant sprays daily.
