What is 1B Hair?

1B Hair is a straight hair type with very slight bends that falls between pin-straight and noticeably wavy textures. It’s the most common hair type globally, yet many mistake its subtle movement for “flat” hair needing aggressive styling.

Here’s something unexpected: Despite being labeled “straight,” 1B hair secretly holds bends at the ends that resist curling irons more than 1A hair does. This hidden texture explains why curls drop faster on 1B strands.

Why 1B Hair Frizz Happens More Than You Think

1B hair develops frizz when humidity swells its cuticle layer unevenly. Think of your hair shaft like shingles on a roof – humidity lifts some cuticles while others lie flat, creating friction and flyaways.

I see this daily in my practice: clients with 1B hair often over-wash trying to control frizz, stripping natural oils that actually protect cuticles. That rough texture you feel? It’s lifted cuticles snagging on each other.

The 1B Hair Volume Trap

1B hair loses volume easily because its medium density strands lie flat against the scalp. Gravity pulls straight hair downward faster than coiled textures, while natural scalp oils travel quickly along the straight shaft.

Never use heavy oils on your roots – I’ve seen it weigh down 1B hair instantly in clinic tests. For lasting lift, apply volumizers mid-length to ends only.

How 1B Hair Reacts to Humidity

Humidity makes 1B hair expand slightly as water molecules penetrate its cortex. This causes hair shafts to push against each other, creating that signature “pouf” effect in damp weather.

Unlike 1C hair which forms defined waves, 1B hair expands uniformly. That’s why anti-humidity sprays with film-forming polymers work best – they create a moisture barrier without stiffness.

From My Experience

After examining thousands of hair samples, I’ve found 1B hair responds poorly to protein-heavy products. Its moderate porosity can’t absorb excess proteins, causing instant brittleness.

My clinic’s microscope shows 1B cuticles lie flatter than Andre Walker’s original classification suggests. That’s why lightweight silicones in serums work better than oils for sealing moisture without drag.

For 1B hair growth, I recommend scalp massages over biotin supplements. Increased blood flow plumps follicles better than oral vitamins, which rarely impact straight hair types significantly.
